Quincy Jones is very well known and was available for interview, unlike Neil Hefti who died twelve years ago. Anyone exploring what’s been written about Basie’s music will surely soon discover the significance of Hefti’s contribution.

But why no mention of Neal Hefti? Surely his arrangements were responsible for the band’s success in the late 1950s and early 1960s? The “casual” viewer would be left with the impression that Quincy Jones had a far greater impact on the band’s sound.
