Comment on The Jazz Standards – A Guide To The Repertoire by Leon Nock https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2022/01/05/the-jazz-standards-a-guide-to-the-repertoire/#comment-731 Thu, 06 Jan 2022 22:17:32 +0000 https://jazzjournal.co.uk/?p=74360#comment-731 There are three errors in this review, possibly regurgitated from Gioia’s text: (1) Very Warm For May ran for 39 performances on Broadway in 1939 and not 1935. Kern, who had made his name on Broadway, was so disappointed at the reception that he quit Broadway and moved to Hollywood. (2) Easy To Love was written by Cole Porter and not Bart Howard. The song was introduced by James Stewart in the 1936 MGM film Born To Dance. (3) On his Capitol album Come Fly With Me, Sinatra performs April In Paris as a ballad and not uptempo as stated.

The musicians were myself, Kennedy Aitchison on piano, Don Richardson on bass and James Powell on kit.
It has been a great experience working with Michael and his fantastic team on some of the best music ever written.

You must be kidding. I learnt to play the sax in Pontiac Reformatory”.

Comment on Joe Maini – a history / 2 by Matthew Wright https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2021/10/15/joe-maini-a-history-2/#comment-706 Wed, 20 Oct 2021 21:20:47 +0000 https://jazzjournal.co.uk/?p=68811#comment-706 Good to see these articles about an underrated player. A few years ago the Joe Maini Memorial came out on LP by Fresh Sounds (FSR409), with tracks by his Quintet/Sextet (Richie Kamuca, Victor Feldman, Lou Levy, etc). It was also included in the Lonehill Jazz set mentioned above. Terrific music and recommended to anyone interested in hearing Maini at his best. Thanks, Gordon, for reminding me; had me getting it off the shelf and listening to it again.
